Prevent Discoloration

Metal discoloration will happen overtime. This is due to a process called oxidation. I cannot stress how important it is to keep headpieces from reacting with other beauty products — lotions, oils, makeup, perfumes, hairspray, gels, etc.  These products speed up the oxidation process when in contact with headpiece metals.

  • Make sure your hands are free of lotion and makeup before handling your tiara. Wash your hands, or use baby wipes!
  • Do not apply hairspray, gel products, or use aerosols with your headpiece on. Try keeping your headpiece its storage box until you are going to wear it.
  • Properly store and maintain your headpieces – see sections below.

Prevent Physical Damage

My headpieces are not fragile. They can be shaped and formed to various head sizes; however, you cannot force it to look a way that it was not designed for without damaging it. Take care when shaping your headpiece–be firm but gentle with your application of pressure. Also follow these recommendations.

  • Avoid bobby pin through the crystals and/or beads on the base–refer to image.
  • Do not aggressively try to reshape your headpiece.
  • Try not to drop or toss around your headpieces.
  • Do not pick at your tiara. Picking at the stones and beads on your tiara can damage it.

Cleaning and Maintenance

It is important to keep your headpieces free of dirt and debris caused by normal handling. As mentioned above oils from your hands, cast-off from aerosol hairsprays, and contact with other substances will discolor your headpieces as well as reduce the rhinestones sparkle. You will want to occasionally clean your headpieces before storing.

  • Do not immerse your tiaras in water!
  • Use a microfiber cleaning cloth to polish larger rhinestones.
  • Use a mild cleaner or rubbing alcohol with Q-tips or a lint-free cloth for cleaning. Using as little of the cleaning solution as possible, remove foreign materials from the headpiece. Do not leave excess cleaning solution on the headpiece. It should be dry when finished.

Storing

The most important tiara care activity is storing your headpieces properly. Your tiaras are not trophies; do not display them in open air. Doing so will cause them to tarnish and discolor more quickly due to oxidation.

  • Make sure your tiaras are dry before storing them. You do not want moisture in your box.
  • Clean them of foreign materials before storing.
  • Store your headpieces in a box.
  • Use a silica gel pack in your box. This will keep the interior of your box dry while it is in storage.
  • You can place your tiara in a zip-lock bag with a silica gel pack inside the zip-lock. Remove as much air as possible from the bag, then place the bag inside your box if you live in a humid area.
  • Store your headpieces at room temperature. Avoid exposing them to extreme high and low temperatures.
